About the Illinois Farmers Union

For more than a century, National Farmers Union has upheld the three sides that form the triangular symbol; legislation, cooperation and education. Members can be proud of the legislative representation, cooperative development and educational opportunities NFU has provided family farmers and ranchers.

Officially called the Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of America, NFU was founded in 1902 in Point, Texas, by Newt Gresham. Since that time the primary goal has been to sustain and strengthen family farm and ranch agriculture. The key to this goal has been Farmers Union’s grassroots structure to this goal has been Farmers Union’s locally. The policy process includes the presentation of resolutions by individuals or a group of Farmers Union members, followed by possible adoption of the resolution at the local, state and national levels.

National Farmers Union is a general farm organization with a membership of nearly 300,000 farm and ranch families throughout the United States. National Farmers Union has 23 individual state organizations and one regional organization covering three states. Even in states where there is no formal organization, you are likely to find that Farmers Union has a presence.

National Farmers Union believes that good opportunities in production agriculture are the foundation of strong farm and ranch families and that strong farm and ranch families are the basis for thriving rural communities. Vibrant rural communities, in turn, are vital to the health and economic well being of the entire U.S.economy. Family farms are an important part of America’s heritage. In addition, rural communities are effective classrooms for learning to be resourceful and self-reliant, while at the same time realizing the value of working together with other members of the community.
